Restless Leg Syndrome

Orthopedic care for Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome is a specific condition that many people have, and it gives people an overpowering urge to move their legs due to an uncomfortable feeling. Reclining and relaxing in the evening can trigger it but moving the legs can temporarily alleviate the symptoms.

If left untreated, restless leg syndrome can harm your sleep and daily activities in your life, so it’s best to reach out to a medical professional if you think you might be suffering from restless leg syndrome.

Symptoms

The largest symptom to indicate restless leg syndromeis the uncontrollable desire to move your legs due to a sensation in your legs that you want to deal with. However, there are other factors that you can keep an eye out for as well, such as if your legs are twitching in the middle of the night, if the weird and uncomfortable feeling in your leg(s) begins when you rest, and if the uncomfortable feeling wanes when you start moving.

People with restless leg syndrome have described the sensation in several ways, some of which are: electric, aching, itching, pulling, creeping, etc., and all of this will feel as if it is happening beneath the skin. It will typically feel very different from numbness or a muscle cramp.

Causes and Risk Factors

There’s no specific cause for restless leg syndrome as of yet, but that hasn’t stopped doctors from determining certain factors that seem to play a role. Those factors include (but are not limited to) genetics (restless leg syndrome might be genetic) and pregnancy. Additionally, if you have Parkinson’s Disease, kidney failure, iron deficiency, or issues with your spinal cord, you might also be more prone to restless leg syndrome.

Treatment

If the restless leg syndrome is caused by an underlying condition, treating that condition can sometimes have a positive impact on your restless leg syndrome. However, there are also specific over-the-counter medications (such as sleep aids and muscle relaxers) that can also help. Your doctor will be able to determine if there is an underlying condition that’s causing your restless leg syndrome.
